Montu, Bantu, Chantu and Pintu have pets.

Montu says, "If Pintu and I each have a dog, then exactly one of Bantu and Chantu has a dog."

Bantu says, "If Chantu and I each have a cat, then exactly one of Montu and Pintu has a dog."

Chantu says, "If Montu and I each have a dog, then exactly one of Bantu and Pintu has a cat."

Pintu says, "If Bantu and I each have a cat, then exactly one of Bantu and I has a dog."

Only one of the four is telling the truth. Who is telling the truth?

Bantu is telling the truth. First of all Pintu's statement is contradictory. Then Montu and Chantu agree. Their statements indicate that it would be possible for M, C, and P to have dogs, and for B to have a cat. Since only one is telling the truth, it must be Bantu.

i beleive the answer is Bantu because he said that pintu and the other guy each have dogs

I think that Montu is correct.

All four of them are actually 2 sets of brothers. Each set has 1 dog. So when u take one bog from each set and say that they have a dog, this automatically says that the other 2 guys have dogs too.

Montu is only person telling truth.

Montu has Dog
Pintu has Dog
Bantu has Dog
Chantu has Cat

Now,
Bantu is wrong as Bantu doesn't have Cat.
Chantu is wrong as Chantu doesn't have Dog.
Pintu is wrong as Pintu doesn't have Cat.
Montu is correct, as Chantu has cat and rest all have dogs.

Replace "Montu, Bantu, Chantu and Pintu have pets" with "Montu, Bantu, Chantu and Pintu have one pet each, which is either a dog or a cat." Otherwise you get into trouble if they own fish, etc., as a previous poster pointed out.

Bantu is telling the truth, and all four own dogs.

Explanation:

Pintu's statement is self-contradictory. He is never telling the truth. Since we know that only one of them is telling the truth, then they all own dogs, and Bantu is telling the truth.

A conditional statement is false only if the antecedent (the IF part) is true and the consequent (the THEN part) is false. It is true if the antecedent is true and the consequent is true, but it is also true if the antecedent is false and the consequent is true, and it is true if both antecedent and consequent are false. For instance, this is a true statement: "If Dan Erickson has never even been in India, then Dan Erickson is not an important person with respect to India." And this is a true statement: "If the earth is the largest planet in the solar system, then Dan Erickson is the prime minister of India". And even this statement is true: "If Dan Erickson is the most important philosopher in Indian history, then Washington, D.C. is the capitol of the United States." But this is a false statement: "If the population of India is greater than the poplation of Ireland, then Dan Erickson is the greatest poet in the history of Indian literature."

If all four own dogs, then Bantu is the only one telling the truth.

If Chantu owns a cat and everyone else owns a dog, then Bantu and Chantu are the only ones telling the truth. If Montu and Pintu own dogs, and Bantu and Chantu own cats, then no one is telling the truth. If Montu and Chantu own dogs, and Bantu and Pintu own cats, then only Montu and Bantu are telling the truth. If everyone owns cats, then only Montu and Chantu are telling the truth. For all other possibilities, Montu, Chantu and Bantu are telling the truth. So there is only one case where only one person is telling the truth: everyone owns a dog, and Bantu is telling the truth.
